We have just sent you an official despatch in reply to your despatch No. 59 of the 20th March about the Port Committee. We agree with what you say and the despatch accepts all your proposals.
There are however two points which have been raised here on which I thought I might drop you a line. The first is whether this Committee is not so important to the life of the Colony that it would justify the presence of the Commissioner of Labour on it (pending the possibility of direct Trade Union representation) rather than that of one of his officers.
The second point is one to which there 18
doubtless a good answer of which we are ignorant. We are not quite clear why you name the Seamans' Union as the Union to which you would naturally turn for nominations. Is it not shore labour rather than sea-going labour that should be represented?.
I know how busy you are and don't want to bother you but if you could let us know what you think on these two points we should be most grateful,
भ
